3 Questions Your Contractor Should Never Ask

Choosing a contractor for your home improvement project is a lot like interviewing a job candidate, with both parties asking the other various questions. Needless to say, communication is a key factor. However, there are some questions that are simply off-limits.

In this article, roof replacement and all-around exterior renovations company Fine Design Builders, Inc. shares three questions that a contractor should never ask you.

1. Do you live alone?

This question already sounds threatening no matter who asks it or how it’s phrased, so it’s even more unsettling to hear it from a contractor that may or may not be working on your house while you’re alone. What the contractor probably wants to know is whether there will be other people, such as a partner or a spouse, who will be involved in the decision-making. If this is the case, then offer answers that steer the conversation toward a more neutral topic.

However, if the contractor insists on asking questions that take a jab at your marital status or your living arrangements, immediately take that as a red flag. A contractor that doesn’t know how to ask tactful questions is someone you don’t want to work with.

2. How much money do you have?

Whether you’re having hurricane windows installed or doing a kitchen remodel, your contractor should never ask you if you have a job, if you’ve ever had to file for bankruptcy and most of all, how much money is in your bank account. Questions about finances should be limited to discussing the budget for the project in question.

3. What other bids have you received?

This question is unprofessional and should not be entertained. A contractor should be confident about their bid regardless of other bids.
